I knew this day would come, when the turtles busted out. Well, not really...more like the Bamboo busted out but whatever turtles sounded cooler.
Back story, Oma was given this turtle bamboo plant that sat next to her bedside. She always made sure it had water and it brought her a lot of joy. When she died, I really wanted the turtle bamboo plant to put at my desk at work and so I can look at it and remember that it sat next to her and now it sits next to me.
Here is a picture of what it looked like when I first moved here...
Over the past few months/years, the roots were becoming so compact and crammed into the little (and poorly designed) tube. Some of the leaves started to yellow, but a new sprout came up so I figured I would just nurse it along as long as I can and when/if it dies I will dig it out and replace it with a new bamboo rod.
Here is a picture I took of it last month. You can see the new green sprout and the yellow ones...
Cute little turtles playing by the water.
WELL, today I went to water it, and the glass was broken and the bamboo roots were reaching out of it! It literally busted out! Can you believe little bamboo roots are strong enough to break glass? DANG! So, at first I just set it in a cup still in its tube...
At lunch, I went over to Home Goods (which I totally fell in love with) to get a new vase but no luck. They didn't have the right size or the little rocks I needed so I got creative and washed out my Vitamin Water bottle and used that, temporarily of course, until I can get to Michaels or Joanne's next week and get a nice set up for it. It was fun breaking the glass test tube with my 5 inch platform shoes. I wrapped it up in a paper towel and it was like "Mazel tov" at a Jewish wedding. I know why they do that, cause its so fun and feels cool to smash glass with your foot.
I haven't decided what to do with the turtles. They are just chillin right now and maybe I can find a a cool test tube to fit in it again, or maybe I'll just leave it at my desk.
You can't tell by the picture but the leaves have grown so much taller. I think it has at least doubled in 3 years.
I love my turtle bamboo and hope it is with me for many years to come.
