I took little Pnut to the vet on Saturday because his skin allergies are bad again. I thought we had a flea infestation because both of them started itching constantly even though I didn't see one flea. They were driving me nuts so I gave them an additional dose of Advantage and then when that didn't work, two weeks later, I gave them Advantix II. It's flea season so I thought the expensive drops would do the trick but Pnut was progressively getting worse. His back was scaly, flaky, red, and inflamed, it was sick! He looked miserable. Daisy was doing fine which was surprising because usually she is really allergic to the flea which is why am still doubting it was flea all along. After looking back in my trusty blog I do see back in 2009 in early September Pnut had a big skin allergy outbreak too so I think I need to watch this time of the year.
Anyhow, at the vet (who I really like) he gave me some good info and gave me some options for flea control and heart guard that I am going to start soon. He gave Pnut a shot of cortisone, some Prednisone, and some medicated shampoo. Can you believe all of that and the visit was under $100! Another reason why I love my new vet.
He said it is an allergy to something...it could be flea, or something else. He said the shot would start to work immediately (which it did) and the steroid every other day would help keep it at bay and the shampoo would be when it flairs up real bad. I am also going to switch to an oral flea treatment on a regular basis just in case its flea and the topical isn't cutting it.
I gave him the first pill of Prednisone this evening and he seemed to do just fine with it. Hopefully he wont have any 'roid rages or anything. haha! Not funny tho, poor little guy. He is doing a lot better though thankfully.
