I’m fine since I got it, I’m goooo-oooood

My first real rap/hip hop show was last night at the Palladium. The much anticipated adventures of Mr. Rager aka Kid Cudi aka Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi. Haha.
Scotty and I grabbed some Combos pizza (concert tradition est. 2008) and bummed around Hollywood a bit before the show. We stopped by Amoeba Records and I told Scotty not to let me leave with anything, which, if you’ve ever been to Amoeba is almost impossible. As we were wandering around I walked over to the “DVD bargain bin” and found the entire Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection! OMG! I’ve had it on my wish list since Christmas and know exactly how much it sells for and Amoebas’ price was at least $20-$30 bucks cheaper. EEEkkkk. Enter my undeniable Pirtle genes that CANNOT pass up a deal especially on a Masterpiece Collector’s Edition, and Scotty not helping by telling me to do it, and I totally bought it! But seriously I love Alfred. Happy freaking Birthday Amy haha. Love it!
We cruise back to the Palladium where the line is still barely finishing circling around the block! The sold out crowd was definitely the largest I’ve ever seen at the venue and I am comforted to see it is a crowd that is filled with a bunch of other white girls and nerds who also have a serious crush on The Kid. He isn’t your typical rapper. He is melodic and his choruses are completely catchy and poppy. His lyrics are deep and not just about cars, jewelry, and hoes, but really what’s in his heart and his passions. And then of course there is a lot of marijuana references which you gotta admit is probably the real reason behind 90% of amazing music, he’s just got the balls enough to actually rap about it.
When we get there my friend Heather from Long Beach hits me up and says she’s there too. We meet up with her and her man and spend a few minutes catching up with them and checking out the opening act before dipping out into the pit. Scotty was hesitant to go into the pit but I twisted his arm because I couldn’t control the urge to dance my booty off. I was not about to do it all on blast in the “standing and clapping section” looking like the drunk girl when I’m really totally on a high off the bass bangin.
Cudi took the time between songs to talk to us. He told us what he was thinking when he wrote the tracks, what track his mama liked, and how he wanted to put everything he had into this record. One of my favorite quotes was regarding Mojo So Dope and he said that he wanted to write a track that really grabbed you by the nuts and made you want to kick some ass to it. I love it! That’s one of my favorite running tracks. Or when he said, “Maybe you are still in ‘IT’. Well, if you are, we’ll be waiting for you when you get through it, and we’ll be there to show you love.” Awesome.
There was a band which was a nice addition. I wasn’t sure if it was just going to be a DJ that spun the track, or what. To my delight there was a drummer that looked like a kid from the local high school drum line. He had a stand up drum set that I’ve never seen and it sounded so solid. That added with the DJ spinnin the bass and I was in hog heaven. There was even a pianist and a guitar.
Words can never describe the feeling of unity that comes from a live concert. To be in a huge crowd of complete strangers, and for those moments when you look over smiling, knowing every word together, loving every beat together, and seeing everyone in perfect harmony. That’s what music can do. If only we could take that out into the world and be like that all the time. The world could seriously be such a better place. Amoeba records theme puts it best, “Peace through music.” LOVE!
Toward the end he said, “We are going to play the next 3 tracks back to back without stopping and I am going to come down into the crowd and dance with you and I want it to be like were at the effing club getting down in here!” And he did!!! He came down about 6 feet from me and was dancing with us. Everyone was going nuts, the energy was so huge, and we were all losing it. I can’t wait to see the documentary they were filming during the show. I was close enough to see him smile with his big beautiful bright smile, so big, you could see his eyes sparkle. As we loved him, he loved us.
He ended the show with Pursuit of Happiness and I rewrote the lyrics. Instead of, “I’m in the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shines ain’t always gold. I’ll be fine once I get it. I’ll be goooo-ooood.” I sang, “I’m fine since I got it, I’m goooo-oooood.” My pursuit of happiness has led me here and I’ve been fine since I got it, now I’m good-oood.
I’m tired. Really tired. But I won’t ever remember missing the sleep; I’ll remember all the good times.
Yup, I’m goooooo-oooood.
