Adventures in Rancho Palos Verdes

View of hike to Shipwreck

I had a lazy and relaxing Saturday. I did some chores, grocery shopped, filled the propane tank for my BBQ, spent time at the pool, snuggled with the pups, caught up on raunchy reality TV shows as well some HDTV shows. It was wonderful.
Sunday, I woke up and ran 4.15 miles and worked out for a few minutes at the gym. I was headed out to the pool to lay around for awhile when Randy called. We’ve been talking about Palos Verdes and a hike I wanted to go on and he told me about a huge tide pool close to the hike, so he talked me into meeting up and checking it out. I figured hiking a huge cliff along the coastline by myself probably isn’t the smartest idea. Anyhow, it was awesome!
First, we went to a trail I knew about to hike to see a ship that wrecked in the 1960’s. The trail was a rocky pathway for a mile or so, and to get to it, you had to scale down the cliffs! I would say it was easily 100+ feet down.
Here is a video of the view from the top (turn the sound down cause the wind is a little noisy:

It was a beautiful day, only about 70 degrees, clear skies, and nice breeze. We walked for about 25 minutes before we got the wreckage. I took a bunch of cool pics. Here are some of my favorites:

It looks like the ship was carrying a tractor, or a tractor got stuck trying to pull the wreckage out, and it is there too. It was kind of creepy. I don’t know why, maybe because I wanted to be creeped out or maybe it’s because I don’t frequently hang out next to wreckages on rocky cliffs or shores (especially with an ex-boyfriend eek! Haha). It was so fun to explore and admire this beautiful and unique earth we are so blessed to live in. It was also really cool being in such a place of solitude in the middle of Southern California. That is really hard to find and it’s nice to know there are little pockets of peace and quiet nearby.
I took this quick video. Its super dorky but I thought I'd post cause taking videos with the iPhone 4 is just too easy.

Second, we drove about a half mile down the coastline to the tide pool. You will never believe it but we saw a HUGE pod of whales!! I don’t know how far off the coast they were, maybe a quarter mile? Distance in water is impossible for my brain to calculate but it was very obvious they were whales. The amount of water that came out of their blow holes was unreal! There must’ve been like 20 of them. I caught these pictures, which is super hard to capture and I can't believe I caught a bit of it.

The tide pools were pretty cool. Monterey has some amazing tide pools too and I was starting to get really hungry. We weren’t there too long but I got to see some marine life and stick my finger in a sea anemone.

I was now hungry for some seafood! Seriously, it was the salty air or something so we went to the best seafood joint in the area called Captain Kidds Fish Market. Awesome fish and chips and coleslaw! The freaking one! Great way to end the weekend.
